Temperatures in Kotzebue early September range from highs of 65 degrees during the day, to lows of 40 at night. mid/ Late Sept. highs range from 40 degrees in the day to lows of 0 degrees or cooler at night.

You are limited to 70lbs. of gear on the charter flight to camp.  Please do not bring the extra large hard suitcases; they will not fit in the plane. For this trip you must have a good sleeping bag, rain gear, and waders. Do not cut corners on these specific gear items.  And most important, try to be in the best shape that you can, prior to your hunt. The success and enjoyment of your hunt can be directly related to your physical condition.

Equipment List for Moose, Caribou & Grizzly Bear Hunting

  • Framed backpack (Needed for all unguided hunters only)
  • Folding saw with bone blade (Needed for all unguided hunters only)
  • Rifle / 30-40 rounds of ammo
  • Binoculars
  • Knives/sharpener
  • Good sleeping bag and pad
  • Hip boots, but I recommendCabela's "Dry-Plus Breathable Waders"in a waist-high stockingfoot
  • Boots to go over stockingfoot waders (cleated sole no felt soles)
  • Clip-on suspenders for waist- high waders
  • Flashlight & extra batteries
  • Camera
  • Water bottle (with filter)
  • Insect repellent 100% Deet
  • Stocking hat / gloves
  • Top quality rain gear (Helly Hansen Impertech)
  • Camp shoes ( insulated leather boots)
  • 1 pair insulated hunting pants
  • 1 pair non-insulated hunting pants (Cabelas uninsulated Dry-Plus pants)
  • 2 pair top and bottom insulated underwear, med-heavy weight(Do not bring cotton)
  • 2-3 hunting shirts
  • Heavy weight socks, 1pair for each day (wool)
  • Heavy coat (with Gore-Tex)
  • Cotton Game Bag
  • Personal toiletry items
  • Iridium Satellite phone is recommended for unguided hunters (1 phone per group). You can rent a phone by going online and searching "Satellite Phone Rental". Phones can be found for between $35-90 for 10 days.

  • 20-30 rounds of ammo premium bonded ammo only!!!
  • Binoculars 10x bring a Hi quality pair!! You will be doing a lot of glassing.
  • Knives/sharpener
  • Good sleeping bag and pad
  • Cabela's "Dry-Plus Breathable Waders" in a waist-high stocking foot (must have.)
  • Boots to go over stockingfoot waders (cleated sole no felt soles)
  • Clip-on suspenders for waist- high waders
  • Flashlight & extra batteries
  • Camera/film/ batteries
  • Water bottle (with filter)
  • Stocking hat / gloves 2 pair
  • Top quality rain gear (Helly Hansen Impertech) (don’t think breathable will work)
  • Camp shoes ( insulated leather boots, tennis shoes)
  • 1 pair insulated hunting pants
  • 1 pair non-insulated hunting pants (Cabelas uninsulated Dry-Plus pants)
  • 2 pair top and bottom insulated underwear, med-heavy weight (Do not bring cotton)
  • 2 heavy hunting shirts
  • Heavy weight socks, 1pair for each day (wool)
  • Heavy coat ( with Gore-Tex) this will help block the wind.
  • Personal toiletry items
  • Soft gun case will be needed for the flight from Anchorage to lliamna, hard cases will stay in Anchorage with lliamna air taxi. If hunting in Cold Bay, Hard cases will go with you.

A.W.C. is not responsible for hotel accommodations due to bad weather or lost hunting days.
  • Weather forecast: wet/ very windy, cold, sleet and a little sun shine, did I say wind/rain? The weather can be very nice but more so than not it is bad, so plan on it.

Please purchase your hunting license and all applicable tags prior to arriving for your hunt. Tags are not always available in the small villages of Alaska. The easiest way to do this is to purchase the tags and license online. The web address is www.admin.adfg.state.ak.us/license
